Nestled within the historic grounds of the Kan’in-no-miya Villa—once a cherished summer retreat for the Imperial Family—Gora Kadan embodies the pinnacle of luxury and heartfelt hospitality.
The name “Gora Kadan” brings together two elements. “Gora” refers to the serene mountain setting, while “Kadan” was a term used by former Imperial households in western Japan to describe their residences when welcoming foreign dignitaries and esteemed guests. A kadan was more than a house. It was a place of personal hospitality, and this villa operated in that spirit through 1948.
Prince Kan’in Kotohito named his villa Gora Kadan when he chose to open it personally to receive and care for his most honored guests.
That legacy of hospitality remains unbroken.
All of the guest rooms at Gora Kadan are furnished with tatami mats, in the style of a sukiya-style house. The entrance to the guest rooms, which leads guests into the Tatami-mat* space, is always marked by an unobtrusive stone with a small stone step.
