I feel very fulfilled at the ryokan, since I am very close to our guests. Because of this, I spend a lot of time serving customers and answering many questions, so there is a lot to learn.
For example, there are 41 guest rooms at Gora Kadan, the stage on which room concierges serve our guests. A guest’s room name and number must be memorized first. Not only are the names unique to each room, so are their specifications, and these, too, must be memorized. Therefore, you will not be assigned to a guest room out of the blue, but rather will be assigned to an internal support team who will offer you the support you need as a room concierge.
Before you are assigned to serve as a room concierge on your own, you will be partnered with a senior room attendant who will train you one-on-one on how to confirm the room’s preparation; welcome guests; introduce guests inside the hotel; show each room; inform guests of the menus for dinner and breakfast, and how to prepare it; and how to see guests off when their stay comes to an end.
At first, there is a lot to learn, but you will find it both rewarding and fun. We encourage you to take on this challenge.

Prior to my work in facilities management, I worked at the front desk welcoming guests and assisting them during their stay at the ryokan.
There was a period when there was a succession of resignations in facilities management, and my supervisor asked me, “Would you temporarily help us in facilities management?” He said I was the right person for the job, as I enjoy camping, bushcraft, and DIY. I remember that I was happy that he had recommended me for the job and, more importantly, that he knew who I was.
Once I got involved in facilities management, I realized that it was an important role, preparing a comfortable environment for our guests. I gained a deep sense of satisfaction and pride that was different from what I felt when I was serving guests at the front desk.
It has been about a year since I officially requested a transfer, and during that time I have been able to acquire qualifications as Hazardous Materials Handler (Class B, Category 4) and Boiler Technician (Class II). Currently, I am preparing to become a certified electrician (Second class).
